Phil Jones Desperate For Manchester United To Get Back Into The Champions League

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has admitted that the whole squad have found it frustrating not to be playing in the Champions League this season - the first time the club has missed out on Europe's elite competition since the 1995/96 campaign.

"We've missed it massively. There's nothing like a European night when the Champions League music comes on," Jones told ManUtd.com this week.

"To have been sitting there and watching it this season, without being a part of it, has been disappointing," he continued.

A 7th place finish under the management of David Moyes not only left the Old Trafford club without the Champions League, but any European football at all - the first time that has happened since the 1989/90 season.

Following a tough start to Louis van Gaal's reign, victory against Crystal Palace at the weekend combined with Liverpool dropping points against Chelsea virtually confirmed United will finish the season in the all-important top four.

Jones feels it is must for a club of United's stature, although he accepts there are no hand outs at this level.

"A team like Manchester United should be in the competition but we've no given right to be there, we need to perform," the 23-year-old said.

"Performances like (at Palace), when you're probably not at your best but you still come away with three points, can be the ones which make sure you get into the Champions League."

United's final home game of the season will see Arsenal visit Old Trafford on Sunday, a game which could help decide which club gets an automatic passage into next season's Champions League group stage and which has to navigate a tricky qualifying round.

"We'll look forward to it," Jones said. "It's a game that everyone wants to play in, it's a big game and we want to win it. We want to finish the season on a high and as strongly as possible. Hopefully we can finish with two more wins."
